Shaheed Mir Ghulam Murtaza Bhutto

Shaheed Mir Ghulam Murtaza Bhutto was the founder of the PPP-Shaheed Bhutto party and the eldest son of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Born in 1954, Mir Murtaza received his Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1976, where he studied politics. Following that, he attended Oxford University and received his MLitt degree. Murtaza played an active role in attempting to prevent his father’s execution by leading a worldwide campaign, albeit unsuccessfully. Following Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s execution, Mir Murtaza spent the next sixteen years in exile, between Syria, Afghanistan, and Lebanon, from 1977 to 1993. During exile, he was a staunch figure against Zia-ul-Haq’s military regime. In 1993, Mir Murtaza returned to Pakistan to prepare for a political comeback, only to be arrested under Benazir’s government. Despite this, he successfully contested in the 1993 elections and won a seat in the Sindh Provincial Assembly. In 1996, he founded the PPP-SB party to prepare for the 1996 elections. However, on 20 September 1996, Mir Murtaza Bhutto, alongside six of his associates, was murdered outside his 70 Clifton home, in a police encounter. In 2008, the alleged murderers were acquitted in the 13-year long trial. Shaheed Mir Murtaza is remembered for his dedication to the country and its betterment, his advocacy of working class rights, and his oratory skills reminiscent of his father.
